Miscellaneous Information
Stanford was born on 23 June 1920 in Yorkton, Saskatchewan. His mother was born in Glasgow, Scotland and his father, a carpenter, was born in Owen Sound, Ontario. They lived at various addresses including 1010 East 22nd Street, Vancouver, and 3822 Windsor Street. Stanford had three brothers and three sisters, Margaret, Marie and Heather. The youngest sister, Heather, died when she was only two years old, in June 1924. He also had a half brother, Frank. He attended the Public School of Invermay, Saskatchewan 1929 -1938, grade 8 and then took a correspondence course 1938-39 to reach grades 9 and 10. He was a truck driver between 1939-1941 for the Western Transport Company, Regina, Saskatchewan who were Hauling Contractors. |
Stanford enlisted on 2 July 1941 and after training embarked for the U.K. on 25 September 1942. On arrival in England, he went to 3 PRC on 10 October 1942, 23 OTU on 3 November 1942, 1659 CU 20 Feb 1943, 408 Squadron 31-May- 1943 and finally, 434 Squadron on 15 June 1943. |

Operation | Mönchengladbach/ Rheydt. 660 aircraft, 25 losses (3.8%). PFF marked Mönchengladbach first and then after a two minute pause, the neighbouring town of Rheydt. Good visibility and Oboe assistance made for extremely accurate marking and as a result the bombing was concentrated with little creepback. Approximately half of both towns was destroyed with 1059 and 1280 buildings destroyed in the two towns (respectively). |
